How to make a profile picture with a clean background

  1. Pick a photo where you stand out from what is behind you — a plain wall or an out-of-focus background is ideal.

  2. Drop it into cutoutpic. The person is detected automatically; on devices with graphics acceleration a refined pass tightens the outline.

  3. Download the PNG, then crop to a square or circle and add a background colour in the app you use for the profile.

Tips for portraits

  • Even, front-facing light. Avoid strong backlight, which turns hair into a halo the model cannot separate.
  • Loose, fine hair against a busy background is the hardest case — tie it back or choose a plain backdrop if you can.
  • Glasses are fine; reflections that show the background may be kept.
  • Leave space around the head: cropping happens after removal, and a cutout that touches the frame edge can look clipped.

Passport and ID photos

Official photos have strict rules on background colour, size, expression and shadows that a background remover does not check. You can use the cutout as a starting point, but verify the requirements of the issuing authority before submitting.

Not with the free preview. The model runs in your browser, so the photo — and the face in it — stays on your device.

Why is my hair edge fuzzy or partly cut off?

Hair is the hardest edge for any segmentation model, and loose strands tend to merge into a solid edge on both tiers. The refined tier, available with WebGPU, gives a tighter outline; a plain, contrasting background helps the most. A little softness at the edge is normal and blends better than a hard cut.

Can I add a colour background for LinkedIn?

Yes, in any editor: place the transparent PNG over a filled layer. cutoutpic itself outputs transparent only for now.
